Bayer Leverkusen moved temporarily top of the German league after beating Hoffenheim 2-1 away, in the game which started the ninth round of fixtures. The second Bayer goal, a Stefan Kiessling header, should not have counted, having gone in through the side netting.

Sidney Sam put Bayer ahead, and then Stefan Kiessling made it 2-0 twenty minutes from the end following a corner, with a header that went just wide, only to sneak into the back of the net through a hole in the side netting. Hoffenheim’s consolation goal came from Sven Schipplock, two minutes before the final whistle.

Referee Felix Brych talked about his huge mistake after the game. “I had my doubts, but when I saw the reactions of the other players, I assumed it was a goal. Everyone on the field thought so”, he added. “There were no signs of anything wrong with the goal frame”.

Hoffenheim manager Markus Gisdol talked of a possible replay of the clash on account of Kiessling’s controversial goal. A match between Bayern Munich and Nuremberg had to be replayed 19 years ago following a similar ‘ghost goal’ from Thomas Helmer.
